Comets Fall in Opener

One year after needing an extended overtime to defeat the expansion Cedar Rapids Rampage in their season opener, the Kansas City Comets fell to the same Rampage 5-3 on opening night of the 2016-2017 season.

Things started extremely bright for the Comets as Milan Ivanovic scored less than a minute into the first quarter to put the Comets on top 1-0. Late in the first quarter, new signing, Guerrero Pino, doubled the lead with a volley on a lofted ball into the box by John Sosa to make it 2-0 by the end of the first quarter. The Rampage have made a number of additions in the offseason, many of them coming from the Milwaukee Wave. In the second quarter, one of those signings, Tony Walls cut the lead to one for the Comets making it 2-1 as the two teams headed into half time.

The third quarter saw Walls again score about half way through the period to tie the game at 2-2. That was the only scoring in the third quarter, but in the fourth the Rampage ran away from the Comets. First Gordy Gurson scored to give the Rampage their first lead of the game, then player/coach Hewerton Moreira scored a pair of goals to put the Rampage up 5-2. The Comets tried to force a comeback, similar to what they'd done last year against the Rampage, but all they could get was a second goal from Ivanovic with four minutes left to cut the lead to 5-3.

The Comets return to action Friday when they'll host the Milwaukee Wave.

Controversy Takes Center Stage, But Finishing Haunts KC in Playoff Loss

For the third straight year, Sporting Kansas City bowed out of the playoffs at the first hurdle, losing 1-0 on the road to the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference wild card round. It was a return to old nightmares for Kansas City fans as the Sounders scored another late goal to lift them to the win over KC. The goal, and game as a whole was not without controversy as Seattle's game winning goal scorer, Nelson Valdez was shown to be offside. Meanwhile earlier in the game on a much tighter call Matt Besler had a goal (rightly) ruled out due to an offside call. Trying not to be a story in the game, referee Ismael Elfath and his assistants became a story of the game as well for fouls and cards not given.

For all the refereeing issues though, Sporting's struggles to find the back of the net cost them just as much as they controlled the play and couldn't capitalize on the chances that they created. KC started the game flying, pinning the Sounders back in their own end with high pressure. Capitalizing on the mistakes, KC created a number of chances for themselves, but were denied by Stefan Frei or the post. A couple of those chances fell to Paulo Nagamura who was playing as high as Benny Feilhaber much of the game. Both times Frei made a diving save to deny Nagamura. The second time the rebound fell to Graham Zusi who fired a shot to the far post, but the ball hit the post and bounced back into play. After the early run by KC, Seattle started to come into the game more and were able to pin Kansas City back in their end, some good footwork along the end line after a corner almost allowed Nicolas Lodeiro to create an own goal. Collecting a pass out wide he cut inside on the KC defense, dribbled along the end line and hit a shot off Matt Besler that wrong-footed Tim Melia, but the KC goalkeeper was able to stop the ball with his foot and recover. KC had another effort that Nagamura cleared off the line, but was called back on a foul by Chad Marshall, but Seattle was certainly in control of the match for the middle of the first half.

The half then turned again though as KC took over again for the final portion of the half. KC continued to create chances and forced another good save out of Frei during this stretch as a Benny Feilhaber free kick was flicked on goal by Kevin Ellis but Frei made a diving save to tip the ball away and keep the game scoreless as the teams headed into the break.

The second half saw Kansas City continue to be the more aggressive side as they tried to capitalize on all their play. For a split second they thought they had in the 52nd minute when Besler headed a free kick past Frei and into the net but Besler was slightly ahead of the last defender and was correctly ruled offside. Seattle had their chances too as Roman Torres missed the goal by inches on a Seattle free kick as Melia scrambled across his goal to cover the far post where Torres had made his run.

The chippiness of the game reached a tipping point around the 70th minute when Sporting KC was breaking on the counter through Feilhaber. Sounders captain Osvaldo Alonso came sliding through Feilhaber to break up the counter, taking Feilhaber out in the process. Right in front of the Kansas City bench, Peter Vermes and his staff were furiously wanting a second yellow card for Alonso on the play to send him off, but Ismael Elfath didn't see anything wrong with the challenge. Seconds later after Feilhaber returned to the field he was given a yellow card by Elfath after he berated the referee before a goal kick, Feilhaber had to be pushed away by Graham Zusi and other teammates. The incident seemed to fire Feilhaber up more, which was helped as he was rained with boos by Seattle fans every time he touched the ball the rest of the game. Feilhaber though put Kansas City on his back last night and almost scored a wonder goal, beating a number of Seattle defenders as he slalomed through the Seattle defense before hitting a shot with the outside of his right foot that Frei had to knock away.

Unfortunately for KC, something that has been the story over the years has been an inability to capitalize on chances and made to pay for it. Seattle did just that. Kansas City had started to sit a little deeper looking to get to extra time and Seattle pushed forward. After a ball was partially cleared to Joevin Jones, the outside back got into the box and fired a ball across the face of goal that Valdez headed past Melia. Replays showed that Valdez was as far, if not further offside than Besler had been earlier in the night, but the assistant referee kept his flag down as Seattle and their fans celebrated.

After the goal Kansas City threw numbers forward trying desperately to find an equalizer, but Seattle's defense packed in and held firm keeping Kansas City from getting any clear looks on goal. When the final whistle blew, Feilhaber again had to be restrained as he again gave Elfath a piece of his mind before leaving the field. Another disappointing end to the season for Kansas City as they couldn't get past the Sounders despite out playing them for long stretches.

Wizards Man of the Match - Benny Feilhaber - Feilhaber may have either sealed himself a new deal, or SKC will earn themselves some very, very upset fans if they don't re-sign Feilhaber. Last night Feilhaber was on the top of his game, in the form that he was throughout his MVP finalist season last year. The only thing that was missing for him was a goal scorer that could put away the chances he created. With Dwyer blanketed by Torres and Marshall, KC's lack of a second option for Feilhaber to work with kept KC off the board.

Player Ratings - Melia 6, Sinovic 7, Ellis 7, Besler 6, Abdul-Salaam 6, Mustivar 6, Nagamura 6, Feilhaber 9, Espinoza 6, Dwyer 5, Zusi 5. Subs Medranda NR, Peterson NR.

Playoff Match Day: Win or Go Home

Sporting Kansas City begin their playoff campaign tomorrow night in the same place that the club started the season, in Seattle, taking on the Seattle Sounders. Back in March, Sporting used a Nuno Coelho shot from distance, a Seattle red card, and some good goalkeeping to help Kansas City a 1-0 win on First Kick. A full almost nine months later the two teams meet for the third time this season, KC won the prior two games, winning by a combined 4-0 scoreline.

The last time KC saw the Sounders they were quitting on then coach, Sigi Schmid in their 3-0 loss to KC at Children's Mercy Park. That loss cost Schmid his job with the Sounders. Since then though, the Sounders have been one of the hottest teams in the entire league, going 8-2-4 over their final 14 games of the regular season to shoot themselves not only into the playoffs, but into a position to host tomorrow's game. They're a completely different team from that time, mainly due to the acquisition of Nicolas Lodeiro to come in and play in the midfield. The Uruguayan international has four goals and eight assists in 13 games since he signed with the club three days after the loss to KC. The club hasn't even missed a beat with Clint Dempsey going out with a medical issue either. Of all the teams in the playoffs probably the only team in better form right now is the New York Red Bulls who have not lost a game since July 3rd.

Kansas City looks set to receive a boost ahead of tomorrow's game with Jacob Peterson being ready to go for the game. Peterson has enjoyed a career year with six goals and one assist, but the fact that KC has been so reliant on him speaks to the team's issues on the wing throughout this season. To Peterson's credit though he is absolutely making the most of the opportunity and has given KC an option as a secondary goal scorer. Kansas City will need Peterson's involvement up top, while Roger Espinoza has done well in a return to the wing, the offense just hasn't seemed to really get things going with a central midfielder playing out on the wing, it also negates some of the best work Espinoza can do on the field when he's forced to that wide position. That said, with KC having won their last two games with the same lineup, Peter Vermes might very well be tempted to stick with the same 11 that have gotten results the last two games. At the very least I'd expect him to do that along the back line, where the team has pitched back to back shutouts since a pair of shutouts against Seattle and Portland at home in July.

Espinoza - Dwyer - Zusi
Nagamura - Feilhaber
Mustivar
Sinovic - Besler - Ellis - Abdul-Salaam
Melia

Number to Remember - 1 - That's the number of games in the series between these two teams that has been decided by more than a single goal. That was actually the last time the two teams met and Kansas City won 3-0.

Key Match Up - Dom Dwyer vs Chad Marshall - One of the big things talked about in regards to KC and their playoff run is their lack of diversity in attack, something KC fans have talked about most of the season. "Dwyer Island" has been in full effect throughout the season and tomorrow he'll be going up against one of the more experienced and strong center backs in the league in Marshall.

PREDICTION - KC hasn't been in bad form lately, but their form pales in comparison to that of Seattle's. The Sounders, playing at home in front of their crowd are the distinct favorites tomorrow. Add in Kansas City's woeful away form for most of the season and the hill to climb for KC looks quite daunting. At the same time Sporting has the experience in big games that you want in these type of situations. Unfortunately I don't think it will be enough against a Seattle team that seems to be a trendy pick as a dark horse to make MLS Cup out of the West.

SKC - 0
SEA - 2 (Morris, Lodeiro)

Sporting Clinch Playoff Spot

Sporting Kansas City punched their ticket to the MLS Cup playoffs with a convincing 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at Children's Mercy Park. With the way other results went today that slide them into the fifth seed and will now see them travel to Seattle on Thursday for a match up with the Seattle Sounders.

While Kansas City controlled the early going, it was the Earthquakes who had the first really good chance just 10 minutes in when a poor pass by Soni Mustivar led to a fast break for the Earthquakes. KC was saved though when Matt Besler cut down the angle on Chris Wondolowski and was able to eventually block an effort on goal in the three on three situation. KC almost paid again for not captializing on all their pressure in the 24th minute when Tim Melia made a save on a shot, but couldn't cover the rebound, Wondolowski collected and Melia pushed wide of his goal pressuring the San Jose captain. Eventually Melia got Wondolowski to retreat outside his box where he crossed a ball towards the back post that was headed towards to middle but eventually headed out for a corner by Kevin Ellis. KC was living extremely dangerous as they failed to capitalize on their possession. Minutes later Kansas City had the chance to take the lead from the spot after a hand ball in the box after a long throw in was flicked on by Ellis. Benny Feilhaber stepped up and coolly slotted his penalty kick into the corner to give Kansas City a 1-0 lead. Kansas City was able to take that lead into the half time break and with the Portland Timbers down 2-0 in Vancouver, Sporting looked well on their way to clinching a playoff berth.

The second half saw the Earthquakes continue to find chances off of mistakes by Kansas City. In the 79th, another Mustivar give away led to another fast break for the Quakes, but Wondolowski headed a cross over the bar after the cross in was a little high. Going the other way, KC continued to search for that insurance goal to secure their playoff berth. They had to wait until late on to get it when Feilhaber found Graham Zusi racing down the wing unmarked. Feilhaber played Zusi into the box where the US international fired the shot past David Bingham and into the net to give KC the 2-0 lead that was more than enough to see off the Earthquakes.

Wizards Man of the Match - Benny Feilhaber - A goal and an assist in what could have been Feilhaber's last game at Children's Mercy Park, Feilhaber pulled the strings on the offense quite well helping Sporting control the game against the Earthquakes.

What We Want to Happen Today 10/23

It's Decision Day in MLS, all games today kick off at 3pm Central time as MLS embraces the final day excitement. For Sporting KC there are really only two other games that matter to them in today's contests, Salt Lake at Seattle and Portland at Vancouver. Depending on how Sporting KC's game is going what KC fans want to happen in one of those games will likely change.

Salt Lake at Seattle
What we want to happen - draw

A draw combined with a KC win will see Sporting KC jump over both teams and into fourth place in the Western Conference, giving them a home playoff game for the first time since 2013.

Portland at Vancouver
What we want to happen - depends on how KC is doing.

This is where things get a little complicated depending on how Kansas City is doing in their game and what other teams you want to make the playoffs. The simplest way to answer this question is to say we want Portland to lose, preferably by a large margin to give Kansas City some cushion in case they lose to San Jose. On the other hand though Portland could leapfrog over Seattle if the Sounders draw with RSL. That would see the Sounders, arguably the hottest team in all of MLS since August out of the playoffs, something that would probably suit Kansas City just fine. So if KC is winning comfortably against the Earthquakes, rooting for a one goal Portland win isn't something to be ashamed of.

For a full look at how other results today affect Kansas City, I direct you back to my post from Monday.

Match Day 34: All Down to This

Sporting Kansas City's season has all come down to this, one game at Children's Mercy Park against the San Jose Earthquakes, a win and their in the playoffs, a draw or a loss and the club puts themselves in the position where they need help to qualify. All the games tomorrow will take place at the same time as MLS completely embraces the final day drama with Decision Day. With all games occurring at the same time it'll create an intense atmosphere in the stands especially, where fans will likely spend time scoreboard watching on their phones during the game.

San Jose is eliminated from playoff contention and is just looking to play the role of spoiler against Kansas City tomorrow. The Earthquakes will be without Anibal Godoy, who is suspended due to yellow card accumulation, it'll be the second straight game against KC he'll miss due to suspension. San Jose will also be without Quincy Amarikwa who suffered an ACL and LCL injury just seconds into the game the last time these two teams faced each other. The Earthquakes will still have Chris Wondolowski who always seems to cause KC headaches.

Sporting Kansas City rested pretty much their entire starting 11 on Wednesday in their final CONCACAF Champions League game against Central FC. The only regular starter that may start tomorrow is probably Jimmy Medranda, who had been suspended last weekend in league play. But he may not start in favor of Peter Vermes going with the "hot hand" on defense and start Seth Sinovic at left back, where he'd helped KC pitch a shutout on the road at Salt Lake. The other good news from last weekend's game was the fact that Tim Melia looks to be rounding into solid form again at the right time of the season making some good saves to preserve the shutout against RSL last week. Elsewhere on the field, Jacob Peterson (probably the most surprising "he needs to be a starter" call of the season) is listed as questionable and could be a game day decision after returning to practice late this week. If he can go it'll be a boost to Kansas City's offense, which struggled last week in his absences. His absence also continued the trend of breaking up probably the strongest part of KC's 11, their midfield, as Benny Feilhaber and Roger Espinoza have both rotated up to one of the wing positions over the past two weeks.

Espinoza - Dwyer - Zusi
Nagamura - Feilhaber
Mustivar
Sinovic - Besler - Ellis - Abdul-Salaam
Melia

Number to Remember - 5 - That's how many goals KC gave up the last time these two teams played in Kansas City. It was the first win by San Jose in KC since 2002. The game is certainly one that has to at least be in the back of he minds of a few of those players, especially those that remember the little details like Benny Feilhaber seems to.

Key Match Up - Matt Besler vs Chris Wondolowski - The US national team teammates are quite familiar with each other after spending numerous friendlies, qualifiers, and a World Cup together. Wondolowski has been the focal point of the Earthquakes attack for seven seasons now, shutting him down is still the key to shutting down the Quakes tomorrow.

PREDICTION - The Quakes really aren't that good of a team this year (and frankly, KC isn't much better), they've scored the fewest goals in the league this year (just 32). At the same time that have allowed the third fewest in the league this season, with just 38, this game unfortunately looks like it could be a slow, sluggish affair based on the way the Quakes play. It'll likely fall on KC to try to open the game up more, something that they have not shown a real ability to do throughout the season. KC's not a team that has attacked quickly under Vermes, they've been able the build up, and against a Quakes team coached by Dominic Kinnear he's going to have the team compact and ready for this game. If KC can't get an early goal, I have a feeling this is a game that is going to leave KC fans stressing and sweating, especially if Portland can start to get a result on the road in Vancouver.

Sporting Reserves Take Care of Business in Final CCL Game

Sporting Kansas City's Champions League run ended about a month ago, but tonight Kansas City officially ended their run in the tournament tonight defeating Trinidad squad, Central FC 3-1 with three players scoring their first goal for the club.

Kansas City started off on the front foot and were inexplicably unable to score in the eighth minute off an Alex Molano free kick. The Swope Park Rangers' midfielder's free kick bounced into the box with no Central FC player going for it, it came to Nuno Coelho who headed the ball towards goal where it bounced off the cross bar and inside of the far post, rebounding out to Connor Hallisey who tried to shoot through traffic but his effort was blocked. Kansas City kept getting forward with ease against the two time Trinidad champions but were unable to find a goal. Hallisey seemed to epitomize that frustration when he received a ball over the top, cut inside to goal, but took one too many touches, pushed the ball wide and lost his shooting angle making an easy save by Jan-Michael Williams in the Central goal.

Defensively KC seemed in control for much of the half, but did look a little shaky on the counter, having an offside call go in their favor early in the half. Late in the half though another counter allowed Central to grab the lead as Ike Opara got caught out of position keeping Jem Gordon onside as he received a through ball by Sean Da Silva and beat Alec Kann. The goal came completely against the run of play but ended up giving Central the lead heading into the half time break.

KC didn't take long to respond in the second half as less than five minutes in they were level as Tomas Granitto played a ball over the top to Cameron Porter who had gotten behind Central's defense. With Williams coming out of goal, Porter got the ball over him and into the far corner to level the score at 1-1. It didn't remained level for long as Kansas City took their first lead of the game just six minutes later. After Central worked their way into KC's half of the field, Jimmy Medranda quickly won the ball and played it forward to Benji Joya, in his debut for the club Joya immediately found Hallisey streaking down the wing. Hallisey cut back against his defender and played a ball across the top of the box to Nansel Selbol who danced around a defender or two before firing a shot into the corner for his first goal for Sporting.

Selbol continued to be a problem for the Central defense and almost scored two more goals but twice hit the post. The first came after a great cross by Ever Alvarado that Selbol volleyed out of the air towards goal and hit off the post. The second came later in the game after some good footwork by Selbol to get space he curled a shot through the legs of his defender, but it hit the outside of the post and went out.

KC had to wait until second half stoppage time for their third goal as Porter was brought down in the box leading to a penalty kick. Hallisey immediately stepped up to take the ball and placed the ball out of reach of the goalkeeper for his first professional goal. His reaction said it all for him as he celebrated with what seemed like a sense of relief that he'd finally scored. KC killed the final few minutes to clinch second in the group and will now look towards Sunday and their game against San Jose.

Wizards Man of the Match - Nansel Selbol - The former Sporting KC academy player was a handful tonight for the Central FC defense with his speed and fast feet. He created a number of chances and was close to a hattrick as he hit the post twice. His goal was also well taken as he created space at the top of the box.

Player Ratings - Kann 6, Alvarado 7, Opara 5, Coelho 6, Medranda 7, Granitto 7, Molano 7, Joya 8, Hallisey 7, Porter 7, Selbol 8. Subs Olum 7.

Saad and Pattaya Season Over - Former SKC Wizards Update

Soony Saad's season with Pattaya United came to an abrupt end this past week. The Thai FA canceled the rest of the Thai Premier League's season after the death of the king, Bhumibol Adulyadej. With the cancelation of the rest of the season, Saad and Pattaya finish the season in 12th place (of 18 teams). Saad finished the season with 28 appearances and nine goals for the club.

Also this week, Kevin Souter looks to be on his way out at Deveronvale FC has he has apparently been transfer listed by the club.

Match Day CCL: A Midweek Distraction

Sporting KC close out CONCACAF Champions League play tomorrow at Children's Mercy Park against Central FC. With both Sporting KC and Central FC being eliminated from the competition already the game has become a glorified friendly. With both Sporting KC and the Swope Park Rangers playing in important games this weekend, this is a game that has become a distraction in terms of preparations for important games on the weekend against the San Jose Earthquakes and New York Red Bulls 2. If it wasn't for the fines and suspension from CCL play the club would receive for forfeiting the game, I think most fans would rather the game just be off the schedule entirely.

Central FC stands with an identical record as Sporting KC, having lost both games against Vancouver and drawing the game in Trinidad against Kansas City. They currently sit third in the group because Sporting has scored more goals away from home in the games between the two teams (two to zero). Both teams sit with three goals scored and seven conceded. Sporting will likely once again get to deal with Atlanta United designated player, Kenwyne Jones, as he's still on loan with the Trinidad champions.

Kansas City looks set to pull out a full squad rotation from Sunday's game against Real Salt Lake, the team announced today that the club had called up four players from the Swope Park Rangers for tomorrow's game. The only regular starter is Tyler Pasher with the other three, Tomas Granitto, Alex Molano, and Nansel Selbol all being reserves. Selbol is suspended for the final so his absence won't be felt for the Rangers come Sunday. The rest of the game day roster is likely to be made up of players who didn't play in Salt Lake on Sunday (except for maybe one) as that lineup will be preparing for San Jose on Sunday. With Diego Rubio out for the season with a torn ACL the "false 9" striker looks set to return to the lineup for Sporting as it'd be shocking if Dom Dwyer even dressed for the game.

Joya - Porter - Hallisey
Appiah - Granitto
Olum
Pasher - Coelho - Opara - Alvarado
Kann

Number to Remember - 2-0-1 - That's Kansas City's record against teams from the Caribbean in international play heading into tomorrow's game. Other than the game earlier this season against Central FC the only other time that KC played a Caribbean team was back in 2002 when KC defeated W Connection of Trinidad 3-0 on aggregate in the CONCACAF Champions Cup (the precursor to the CCL).

Key Match Up - Ike Opara vs Kenwyne Jones - I think that this could be a fun match up to watch tomorrow. You have Jones a strong forward with experience in one of the best leagues in the world going with someone in Opara who is very athletic, it has the makings of a fun match up to watch between the two.

PREDICTION - I do have to wonder how much either team is really going to put into the game tomorrow since it matters to neither team. Kansas City has their big game on Sunday against the Earthquakes while the Rangers have the USL final. On the other side, Central have kicked off their season in Trinidad, but are off until the 25th so they could put out their full first team for the game tomorrow, looking to win their first game over an MLS side (or one dressed like one). I think that extra break for the Trinidad side will have them fresher for a game against a Sporting side that may be looking more to get out of the game without injury.

A Look at Where KC Could Finish

Sporting KC is still looking to clinch a playoff berth heading into the final game of the regular season next Sunday at home against the San Jose Earthquakes. A win and Sporting Kansas City book their place in the playoffs, a draw or a loss and Kansas City can still get in, but will be forced to scoreboard watch and hope other results don't go against Kansas City. At this point though Kansas City can still finish anywhere from fourth to seventh in the West. Here's a quick look at how Kansas City could finish in each of those spots.

Fourth Place

Win over San Jose AND
Salt Lake and Seattle draw AND
Portland loss, draw or win by the same amount (or less) as Kansas City beats San Jose against Vancouver

That string of results would see Kansas City finish tied with at least Salt Lake, and potentially Portland as well if the Timbers were to beat Vancouver on the road. If Portland win in this scenario, all three teams would be tied on 47 points, with Salt Lake being sixth because they'd have fewer wins (currently all have 12), while Portland would finish fifth because KC would have a better goal difference (currently -1 to -2). In that scenario Seattle would be out of the playoffs. If Portland doesn't win they are out of the playoffs instead with Seattle finishing in the sixth spot, RSL fifth, and KC still fourth.

Obviously this is the favored result KC wants as it would give them a home game against the fifth seeded team which would be either Portland or Salt Lake.

Fifth place

Win over San Jose AND
Salt Lake or Seattle win AND
Portland loss, draw or win by the same amount (or less) as Kansas City beats San Jose against Vancouver

This string of results would see the winner of the Salt Lake and Seattle game take fourth place in the West on 49 points (RSL) or 48 points (Seattle). KC would finish fifth on 47 points beating out Portland if they win on goal difference again, or without tiebreakers if the Timbers lose or draw. If Portland wins the loser of Salt Lake and Seattle would miss out on the playoffs, If Portland loses or draws they would be out.

This would probably seem to be the most likely scenario based on form this season with Seattle winning and Portland losing or drawing, putting KC into a match up on the road at the Sounders, where Sporting started their season.

OR

Win over San Jose AND
Salt Lake and Seattle draw AND
Portland beat Vancouver by more than KC beat San Jose

In this scenario KC, Salt Lake, and Portland would again all finished tied on 47 points. Like before, Salt Lake would finish sixth because they would have fewer wins than KC and Portland. KC would finish in fifth because Portland would overturn KC's goal difference advantage in this position and finish in fourth. That'd mean a rematch of last year's wild card game at Providence Park.

Sixth place

Win over San Jose AND
Salt Lake or Seattle win AND
Portland beats Vancouver by more than KC beat San Jose

A bit of a combination of the fifth place scenarios, Salt Lake or Seattle would take fourth place staying ahead of KC and Portland who would be tied on 47 points. Portland would again overturn the goal difference advantage KC has and drop them to sixth. The loser of RSL and Seattle would be out.

OR

Draw with San Jose AND
Any result in Salt Lake vs Seattle AND
Portland draw or lose at Vancouver

In this scenario KC would finish with 45 points, potentially level with Seattle on points, but the Sounders win the first tiebreaker, having 13 wins already to KC's 12. The winner of Salt Lake and Seattle would then host the other in the wild card game while KC would take on the LA Galaxy.

OR

KC lose to San Jose AND
Any result in Salt Lake vs Seattle AND
Portland lose to Vancouver by as much or more than KC does

The goal difference tie breaker again comes into play as a loss could still see Kansas City qualify for the playoffs if the Timbers lose by as much or more than KC were to lose to San Jose.

Seventh place

Draw with San Jose
Any result in Salt Lake vs Seattle
Portland defeat Vancouver

In this scenario Portland leaps over Kansas City, while the best KC could do is finish on 45 points, where they'd lose the tiebreaker with the Sounders if Seattle were to lose at home.

OR

KC lose to San Jose
Any result in Salt Lake vs Seattle
Portland win, draw, or lose by less than KC loses

In this scenario it all comes down to what happens at BC Place between Vancouver and Portland. If KC loses and Portland losses by less, they move ahead of KC on goal difference, winning that tiebreaker, and obviously if KC lose and Portland get any sort of result they move ahead of KC, ending KC's run of playoff appearances.

In the end, things are very simple for Kansas City, win and you're in. If you can't get the win then you are reliant on the results of others to help you punch your playoff ticket. Hoping on the team with the worst home record in the league (Vancouver) to beat the team with the worst road record in the league (Portland) isn't something that I'd want to be hoping for.

No Win, But Sporting Still Control Their Destiny

Sporting Kansas City shored up their defense in Salt Lake City on Sunday night, but was unable to clinch a playoff berth with two games left as the club played to a 0-0 draw at Rio Tinto Stadium. What that means is that heading into next week's final slate of games, there are four teams vying for three playoff berths as KC host San Jose, Portland travel to Vancouver, and Seattle host Salt Lake. Kansas City's defense, that has been in question over the last few weeks showed up strongly as they pitched a shut out on the road in Salt Lake 0-0.

Neither side really created much in the way of chances in the first half, but the few that were created went in favor of RSL. The best came in the 20th minute as a free kick was headed across goal where Yura Movsisyan first missed before Burrito Martinez headed a ball on goal that Dom Dwyer saved on the line. KC's chances in the first half were minimal and shots they did get ended up being placed right at Nick Rimando. Late in the first half RSL had another golden opportunity off a free kick but the flick header by RSL went wide and the two teams went into the break tied at 0-0.

The second half saw RSL continue to get the better of the chances going forward, but shooting either wide of the goal or goalkeeper Tim Melia coming up with some good saves to keep the game tied at 0-0. The best chance of the game probably came in the 56th minute when some good passing by RSL eventually found Yura Movsisyan in the box with a chance on goal, but the ball got stuck under his feet and he couldn't get a shot off before KC knocked the ball away and then Joao Plata put a shot wide. Minutes later RSL had another great chance as Plata got himself under a deflected cross and fired a shot on goal but Melia got down well to parry the shot away and keep the game scoreless. KC had a good chance in the 64th as Dom Dwyer got played in behind the RSL defense but couldn't put an effort on goal from a wide position against Nick Rimando. Minutes later KC probably should have had a penalty kick in their favor as Benny Feilhaber was brought down in the box, but no call was made. RSL continued to put on pressure and in the 79th Melia was again called on to make a big save from point blank range against Plata, making himself big he was able to knock the header away and keep the game scoreless. Late on KC created some good opportunities, first Dwyer connected on a header on a cross but his downward header hit the ground too early and bounced up into a good spot for Rimando to parry the shot away. Then in stoppage time after RSL counldn't clear a corner, the ball got crossed in to Kevin Ellis who had a free header but put his effort at a late winner wide.

Wizards Man of the Match - Tim Melia - Came up with the big saves that Kansas City needed him to make at the right time. He stepped up exactly when KC needed him to.

Honorable mention - Matt Besler

Player Ratings - Melia 8, Sinovic 7, Besler 8, Ellis 7, Abdul-Salaam 7, Mustivar 7, Nagamura 6, Feilhaber 5, Espinoza 6, Dwyer 5, Zusi 5. Opara NR.

What We Want to Happen Today 10/16

We're into the final two weeks of the regular season and for Kansas City things are still up in the air regarding the playoffs. They still have a strong chance of qualifying for the playoffs, but scoreboard watching begins if Kansas City ends up losing to Salt Lake. The entire Western Conference kicks off at the same time today so that will add a little extra drama to the games as well. Out East there's not really much left for KC to focus on. Sure there are MLS Cup hosting chances, but even that feels like a bit of a pipe dream to wish for (more so than wishing for a trip to MLS Cup) so I'm solely going to focus on the West.

Colorado at Portland
What we want to happen - Colorado win

Portland is the lone team in the Western Conference still in the playoff race that is outside looking in right now. A win today for the Timbers would keep their playoff hopes alive for another week, especially if Sporting lose in Utah. That'd allow Portland to leap frog Kansas City and into a playoff position. The good thing for KC fans is that Colorado still has something to fight for, they are still chasing this year's Supporters' Shield, so they're not going to be putting out a reserve squad to rest their starters. The other thing to watch for in this game is that Portland have a must win CCL game this coming mid-week that could play some role in squad selection. A draw here also isn't the end of the world for KC as it would still allow Kansas City to control their own destiny if they lose to RSL.

Seattle at FC Dallas
What we want to happen - Dallas win

KC has two ways to clinch a playoff berth today, both involve KC beating RSL, but then they need Portland to lose/draw or they need Seattle to lose to Dallas (because of Seattle's final match being against RSL). So to hedge some bets here go ahead and root for Dallas to get the win. A Dallas win would also keep Kansas City's hopes of hosting a wild card game alive.

LA at Houston
What we want to happen - Houston win

It is still theoretically possible for KC to finish as high as third place in the West if they win out and LA takes no more than one point the rest of the season. So LA dropping points against Houston keeps those hopes alive.

Vancouver at San Jose
What we want to happen - doesn't matter

Both teams are eliminated from the playoff race.

Match Day 33: The Final Stretch

Sporting Kansas City head into the final two games of the season with their playoff chances still very much in doubt. With two games left, KC sit in sixth place in the Western Conference, two points above seventh place Portland who is under the red line at this point. Every team in the league has played 32 games at this point, with the final two games of the season being played at the same time among all Western Conference teams. KC can still technically finish as high as third and as low as seventh and out of the playoffs. Their final push will start tomorrow on the road against an old rival in Real Salt Lake.

Salt Lake is one of four teams (along with KC) fighting for the last three playoff spots in the Western Conference. They'd been in a comfortable position just a few weeks ago, but a five game winless streak (0-3-2) including going winless in their last two home games (0-1-1) has seen them slip down the table into a precarious situation, especially given their form. Even with that though RSL can clinch a playoff berth tomorrow if they can defeat Sporting KC, something they've done two times in KC already this season. Kansas City has not won against RSL in six straight league games, going 0-4-2 in that stretch, the team's last win was in 2013 when Ike Opara scored in stoppage time to win it 2-1 for KC in a game that ultimately decided who hosted MLS Cup 2013.

A few weeks ago Kansas City ended their long road winless streak with a win in San Jose, then two weeks ago KC fell to the New England Revolution on the road. If KC wants any chance of clinching a playoff berth tomorrow night then they'll need to pick up another road win in Salt Lake, where the home side has only lost one time all season, a 1-0 loss to Houston. Kansas City's defense has been the big talking point most of the season for the team as they've been unable to find a consistent partnership back there with five different players making at least eight starts at center back over the course of the season. Tomorrow though KC will be forced to make one change on the back line, although it won't be at center back, left back Jimmy Medranda is suspended for the game tomorrow. The question is how does Peter Vermes replace him, does he go like for like and insert Seth Sinovic, or does he go with another similar lineup, putting Matt Besler in at left back and have the team transition between a 4-3-3 and a 3-5-2 over the course of the game? The later would fit the set up that Vermes has done previously when Medranda has been unavailable (September's 3-3 draw at home against Houston).

Zusi - Dwyer - Peterson
Feilhaber - Espinoza
Mustivar
Besler - Ellis - Opara - Abdul-Salaam
Melia

Number to Remember - 2 - That's the number of scenarios that KC has to clinch a playoff berth tomorrow. Both first involve KC needing to get a win against Real Salt Lake. The first scenario needs a KC win combined with a Portland draw/loss at home against the Colorado Rapids, who are currently leading the Supporters' Shield race, so they certainly have a lot to play for tomorrow. The other scenario involves a KC win combined with a Seattle loss on the road at Dallas. The reason for this would be that KC would jump over both Seattle and RSL who sit on 45 points, those two teams meet in Seattle the final week, meaning that both teams couldn't pass KC's 46 points and KC would win the "most wins" tie breaker over Real Salt Lake if KC, Seattle, and RSL all finished with 46 points.

Key Match Up - KC defense vs RSL attack - Much has been said about KC's defensive issues, with two games left in the regular season, Sporting KC really needs to get things squared away before a potential playoff run. One of the things that made KC's defense so good back in 2011-2013 was the consistency of the back line, week in and week out it was the same four guys in front of goal for KC, the group was able to get comfortable with that, this season KC really has not had that and at times it has certainly shown through.

PREDICTION - Neither team is in a great run of form right now and both teams are desperate for a result tomorrow. Since July, RSL has shut out just one team, Dallas, they've struggled to keep teams from scoring goals, Kansas City has been direct most of the season, but if Graham Zusi is back in the lineup there's the chance for a bit more dynamic play in the attack. Rio Tinto hasn't been friendly to KC, and in the end I think Kansas City would certainly take a draw tomorrow, while it wouldn't clinch a playoff berth it would keep them in control of their own destiny heading into the final game of the season.

Preki Named St. Louis FC Coach - Former SKC Wizards Update

Former Kansas City Wizard great Preki is back in the coaching ranks in the United States. After leaving the Sacramento Republic for what looked like a job in England, Preki has been without a job for a couple years now. He'll be back coaching in the USL next spring though as today Preki was named the new head coach of St. Louis FC. He'll be returning to a city where he was a star during his playing days, playing with the St. Louis Storm of the old MISL back in the early 90's. He'll try to bring the St. Louis FC franchise, to their first playoff berth as they'll enter their third season next year.

Elsewhere, Yura Movsisyan will be back in MLS next season, Real Salt Lake announced this week that they had completed a deal to turn his loan deal with Spartak Moscow into a permanent move for Movsisyan.

Here is the rest of this week's minimal update due to the international break.

What We Want to Happen Today and Tomorrow 10/12, 10/13

After a weekend where there was only a single game that really had only a minimal effect on Kansas City (Houston was officially eliminated from playoff contention) we have a couple midweek games this week to get every team in the league up to 32 games played heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. Two of the games have some potential interests for Kansas City both above them and below them heading into this weekend, while the Eastern Conference match up features one eliminated team and one close to elimination. Here's what KC fans want to happen today and tomorrow in the two Western Conference games.

10/12
Houston at Seattle
What we want to happen - Houston win

A Dynamo win keeps the Seattle Sounders just a single point ahead of KC with their final game in hand being played. Sporting may not be able to pass Seattle in the end, but keeping them ahead by just a single point heading into the weekend would at the least be a confidence boost. A win for Seattle would also put a lot more pressure on this weekend's opponent for KC, as Real Salt Lake would fall into 5th place and face an away wild card game if the playoffs were to start before this weekend.

10/13
San Jose at Colorado
What we want to happen - Colorado win

Colorado (and a way out of the wild card game) is beyond Kansas City's reach at this point, sitting 11 points clear with KC only having six available points. Meanwhile, San Jose sit six points behind Kansas City, below the red line. A win by Colorado would eliminate San Jose from playoff contention because the best they would be able to do is tie Kansas City on points with 43, and they would lose the first tie breaker against Kansas City, which is most wins. Even if they were to win their final two games, San Jose would only finish with 10 wins, while KC would still sit on 12 wins. A draw would keep the Earthquakes hopes alive, but would mean any more points dropped by them or gained by KC would eliminate them.
