Sporting's New Jersey Leaks

Sporting Kansas City's new primary jersey was not supposed to be unveiled until the club's "Sporting Evolution" at the Uptown Shoppes on March 4th. Last year, Sporting KC was the lone MLS club that managed to make it to their jersey unveiling without it leaking out to the public before hand. Unfortunately the club didn't make it to the event this year, earlier this week, a picture was accidentally posted online by an affiliate of MLS. The photo had MLS team uniforms in the background, including Sporting's new jersey. Then today, the site Fanatics.com posted the new jersey for not just KC, but for a number of MLS clubs including Columbus, Portland, and Vancouver. The jersey has been pulled from the site at this point, but not before everyone that saw it and wanted to grab screen shots was able to do so.

The new jersey has a grid pattern look with an indigo collar the actual lines on the jersey are actually broken up with little diagonal lines. The collar is open with a snap on it to allow players to have a wider collar if they want to. On the sleeves, as mentioned previously by people in the league, the US/Canadian flags are gone from one of the sleeves with the new MLS logo now appearing on both of the jersey's sleeves. On the back, the Sporting Club at the top of the jersey is changing a little bit. The logo will now be a bit harder rubber/plastic, as the team logo on the front of the team's secondary jersey was this past year.

Overall I'm fairly "meh" on the jersey. I certainly don't dislike the new jersey, but I'm not in love with it. It's certainly not going to be my favorite jersey the team will be wearing this coming year, that's still the striped secondary jersey. I'm sure it'll look good enough on the players though.

The new design has brought about a bit of humor today though. Those saying they can buy the same shirt at Kohl's for $15 and just buy the patches. There there are these.

  1. I'm with you, "meh."

I would have rather they had kept last season's primary.

  2. I know I'm in the minority.
    I really like it.
    It's clean, and pretty classy...

And I've always really disliked the split-sided jersey (Gah, that felt good to get off my chest, whew!).
    I can't exactly articulate why...

I'm looking forward to the new kit.

  3. I didn't like it at first having only seen the overall shot, but after seeing the close ups that show the pattern in the grid, i like it a little better and i expect it will grow on me further after i see it in action. the state line jersey, while being visually striking, was slightly confusing and i think it will be a good thing to be done with it and on to a jersey that reads as being the home team regardless of which angle it is viewed at.
