FC Kansas City and Sporting KC announced today that the Blues' home opener will in fact be played at Sporting Park. The plan since the two clubs formed their partnership had been to have the home opener at Sporting Park to start the Blues' 2014 season as they look to defend their NWSL title. With the Blues at home the first weekend of the season against Sky Blue FC the question was all about the date.
Sporting KC is set to play Real Salt Lake at home on Saturday April 11th, and with that game and easy sell out for Sporting there was no reason to do a double header and double up on games when SKC sells out without an extra game. So the best option for the Blues was to play the day after. So FCKC will kick off their season on Sunday afternoon at 3pm against Sky Blue FC at Sporting Park.
It should be a good opportunity for the women to play in the stadium and its amenities. No offense to their prior stadiums, but it will also give a more professional feel for the game as well. Hopefully they can pull in a good crowd.
