I'd failed to bring this up the other day, but Sporting Kansas City announced on Monday that the team and jersey sponsor, Ivy Funds, had agreed to extend the sponsorship for another five years. The current deal, signed in 2013 was through the 2017 season. Now with the new extension, the investment firm will be displayed on the front of Sporting KC's jerseys through the 2022 season.
The financial details of the deal were not announced, but it's speculated by the KC Business Journal that the deal would be on par with the naming rights of the Sprint Center. The Sprint Center deal was announced as being a 25 year, $62.5 million deal. That breaks down to $2.5 million per year. If that's true, then there was no increase in the sponsorship cost as that was the reported cost last year when the deal was announced as well.
Personally I like the sponsor for Kansas City, I think it matches well with the jersey and for me it works for the team. I'm also quite glad it's not someone like Herbalife or AdvoCare, it just feels like it has a more professional feel to it.
