Ahead of last night's game a new rumor started to circulate around KC regarding the team's leading scorer, Dom Dwyer. Reports from the UK were saying that English Championship side, Wigan Athletic was interested in bringing in the striker.
This is not a surprise, nor should Sporting fans expect rumors like this to stop, especially once the summer window opens in England. I'd expect we'll see a number of English teams interested in Dwyer if he continues his current form.
The reason for this is because Dwyer is not only English and wouldn't require a work permit, but is playing extremely well right now, having become the league's leading scorer after his brace last night against Toronto. The other thing is that Dwyer has shown an interest in wanting to return to the UK. Two years ago he nearly went on a loan to Scottish club St. Mirren and then this past January was on the verge of a loan move to Charlton Athletic before a managerial change derailed that move.
Dwyer has scored 10 goals in 12 appearances so far this season to go along with his two from last year. Last season, Wigan scored 61 goals as they finished 5th in the Championship, losing out to QPR in the playoffs. If Dwyer were to join Wigan, he'd be joining another former Sporting player, Roger Espinoza. He'd also become the fifth former player in the Championship with Kei Kamara (Middlesbrough), Yann Songo'o (Blackburn), and Federico Bessone (Millwall).
