Sporting Unveil New Jersey, Name Besler as Captain

Tonight at the Charles Wheeler downtown airport, Sporting KC made two announcements. The first was the unveiling of their new secondary jersey for use in the 2014-2015 season. The second was the announcement of the new captain.

Sporting's new secondary jersey fills in the MLS hoops gap that was left by FC Dallas when they went with a straight red jersey. The jersey features Sporting blue and indigo stripes on the front and an indigo back.

The one worry I have looking at the jersey is that I'm not sure it gives KC enough contrast to their current primary jersey. There's still a lot of Sporting blue on the front of the jersey. The back though should lead to enough of a different though. Still I am a little surprised that MLS allowed this jersey to be their secondary.

The coolest part of the jersey to me though is on the inside of it behind the crest, where the team has added the "For the Glory of the City" motto that started around the 2012 US Open Cup final.

CAPTAIN

Also tonight, Sporting KC named their captain to replace Jimmy Nielsen. As most people seemed to predict, Peter Vermes chose home town hero, and national team regular, Matt Besler to be the team's new captain.

There really wasn't another option for Sporting in my opinion. Besler was the odds on favorite, with only fleeting thoughts in my head of Paulo Nagamura being named instead of him.

Congrats to Besler, he will be a fantastic captain for this team going forward.

I completely agree with there not being enough contrast in home and away shirt. Really wish they'd just use the away shirt as the home shirt as it has more character.
