Sporting made their first offseason acquisition today, after having three players leave earlier this week either by retirement (Jimmy Nielsen) or being waived (Kyle Miller, Brendan Ruiz). Today Sporting made a deal with the Portland Timbers, acquiring midfielder, Sal Zizzo from the Timbers in exchange for allocation money.
The 26 year old Zizzo has spent the last three years with the Portland Timbers, playing in 60 league games, starting 28 of them, scoring two goals. Before that he spent the 2010 season with Chivas USA playing 10 times, starting once, being acquired through a weighted lottery.
Zizzo was one of the bright spots of the 2007 U20 World Cup in Canada for the US. His performance there helped him to get a contract in Germany with Hannover 96. In his four years in Germany though he only made a handful of appearance for the Hannover first team.
He'll help to provide KC with depth on the wing position. It'll be interesting to see what this means for a similar player currently on KC's roster, in Jacob Peterson.
