Last night at the club's Pitch Black event at Sporting Park, the club announced the award winners this year as voted on by fans and media. The bigger winner was Graham Zusi. The Sporting KC midfielder took home both the team's offensive player of the year award and the team's MVP award.
Matt Besler was named the defensive player of the year, beating out the rest of the traditional back line starters and Jimmy Nielsen to win the award. Newcomer of the year also went to a defender, as Ike Opara beat out Benny Feilhaber to win the award.
Feilhaber didn't go home empty handed though, he took home the goal of the year award for his strike against Colorado.
Sporting also handed out a number of awards that were not voted on. Claudio Bieler earned the team's Golden Boot for his 10 goals this year. Aurelien Collin took home the humanitarian of the year for his work with the Victory Project. David Leichty earned the team's Bob Gansler award for outstanding academy player.
Also Kansas Rush was named the Sporting Network club of the year. And Sporting St. Louis Rangers took home the academy affiliate club of the year.
