It was fun for the last week or so to dream about a Sporting KC vs KC Athletics US Open Cup 3rd round match up at Livestrong Sporting Park. That dream came crashing down to earth hard tonight in Orlando when Orlando City destroyed the Athletics 7-0 at Seminole Soccer Complex. The defending USL Pro champions will now travel to Kansas City next week looking to complete the sweep of Kansas City teams in the tournament against the MLS side.
Before KC plays Orlando on Tuesday the 29th, they'll play San Jose on Sunday the 27th. Meanwhile, Orlando will be taking on the LA Blues on Thursday the 24th, and then play Charlotte on Saturday the 26th.
Already some fans are visualizing the worse, a repeat of last year's performance against a USL Pro side, Richmond, where KC controlled play until they reached the final third of the field, then struggled to break down the USL side. Hopefully the team has learned their lesson and Peter Vermes drills this into his head.
Things didn't start well for the Athletics tonight, as in only the 4th minute, a cross into the box was heading into the Athletics net by defender Coady Andrews for an OnGoal. The Athletics held out for the next 20 minutes, but in the 26th Max Griffin scored to make it 2-0. Two minutes later, John Rooney put one in from short range to make it 3-0. Before the half, Griffin finished his brace to make it 4-0 at the half.
In the second half, Orlando had to wait until the 60th minute to make it 5-0, which they did through Jaime Watson. Rooney got a second in the 71st. In the 86th, Matt Luzunaris made it 7-0 where the game finished. Based off the lineup, the Athletics were only able to get 11 players down to Orlando for the Tuesday game unfortunately.
