No matter who Sporting Kansas City play in the 3rd round of the US Open Cup, one thing is for certain, Sporting KC will play the game at Livestrong Sporting Park. Today, US Soccer announced the pairings and hosts for the third round of the tournament, schedule to take place on May 29th. Sporting KC will host the winner of the second round game between Orlando City and the KC Athletics.
Both of which are enticing match ups for Sporting. Should they play Orlando City, Sporting will be going up against the defending USL Pro champions 2 days after what is expected to be a tight game against San Jose at Livestrong Sporting Park. The good news is that the game is in KC, but with it being only 2 days before the Orlando game, I'm not sure we'll see many first teamers, and I'm not sure how Sporting's reserves will match up against Orlando.
If the Athletics end up getting a second upset against Orlando, Sporting will get a Kansas City derby against the USASA club side at LSP. That'd definitely be a fun match up for fans to see two Kansas City teams go at it in a meaningful game.
Sporting will find out who they play, next Tuesday, the 22nd when Orlando and the KC Athletics meet down in Florida.
