The US U23 team got their Olympic qualifying campaign started on the right foot with a 6-0 win over Cuba in their first group game. Joe Corona of Club Tijuana in Mexico scored a hattrick, while Juan Agudelo, Freddy Adu, and an own goal rounded out the scoring against the Cubans. Cuba spent a majority of the game down to 10 men after an early red card when Agudelo took an elbow to the face.
Sporting KC forward, Teal Bunbury came on as a half time sub for Agudelo. Bunbury had a few decent opportunities, all of which ended up being saved by the Cuban goalkeeper, including a fairly decent finger tip save. Bunbury's touch looked better than it had against DC, but Bunbury also had more space to work with. Hopefully he can use this as a way to boost his confidence.
The win for the US puts them on top of group A with 3 points, El Salvador and Canada played to a 0-0 draw earlier in the night sit tied for second on 1 point, and Cuba is 4th on 0 points. The US take the field again on Saturday when they'll take on Canada. A win would go a long way towards clinching qualification for the semifinals in Kansas City.
