MLS is apparently in the business this week of releasing all their information for the drafts this offseason. Earlier this week they announced the rules for the upcoming expansion draft for Montreal. Now MLS has announced the rules for two more of the offseason drafts.
First the second year re-entry draft rules have been announced. Three types of players are going to be available for the draft:
1. Players 23 and older with at least three years of MLS experience whose options were not exercised by their clubs.
2. Players at least 25 years old with at least four years of MLS experience who were not signed and whose clubs did not offer them a contract at their previous salary.
3. Players at least 30 years old with a minimum of eight years of MLS experience who do not have a contract and whose club does not want to sign them.
The first stage of the draft will take place on 12/5. Like last year, teams will then have a week to agree to a deal with the player that they draft at their current contract or raise. If players aren't selected in that stage, or teams don't agree to terms, they go into the second stage on 12/12.
The other draft is the MLS Superdraft. This one is the one to pay attention to if you're a Sporting KC fan in KC. That's because the Superdraft is going to be held in Kansas City on January 12th as part of the NSCAA convention. The Superdraft does lose a round this year, instead of being 3 the Superdraft will be 2 rounds. The draft will begin at 11am with the first round on ESPN. The whole draft though will continue to remain 6 rounds as there is a 4 round Supplemental draft on January 17th. Like previous years I will be live blogging the draft again and with it in KC I will be hoping to provide it from the draft itself.
The Superdraft starts at 11pm at night?
