Ryan Smith is done for KC for the season. He left the team and has returned to England for a family issues and will not be returning to the team this season. The specifics of the situation were not revealed, but he does have a daughter that is in the UK, so maybe that played some sort of part in it. Smith missed time at the end of last season for family issues as well.
While the door on Smith returning has not been closed, I don't expect him to be back in a Sporting KC jersey unfortunately. I think he's going to find a club probably in one of the lower divisions in England and KC will either release him from his contract or get some sort of transfer fee for Smith. Smith is in the second year of a four year contract so he'd need to be released or transferred. It's sad that Smith's time in KC looks like it's likely over, he brought a creativity that KC really hasn't had in a long time. Although Carlos Marinelli was close, but it turns out those two are a little comparable due to their jumping around clubs and injury issues that plagued their time here in KC. Smith though obviously has a better attitude and endeared himself to fans a lot better. If Smith is in fact done, he finishes his career with four goals and seven assists in his 32 games for the club. Hopefully Smith gets these family issues under control. Good luck.
