Leading for three straight periods is hard. Holding onto a lead after three periods proved even harder for the Comets as they fell 13-12 to the Baltimore Blast at First Mariner Arena.
Baltimore struck first on a re-start goal by Adauto Neto early in the first quarter. Vahid Assadpour got the Comets on the board a few minutes later with an unassisted goal from beyond the 3-point line. After another Blast goal, Geison Moura scored, followed by Byron Alvarez’s unassisted 3-pointer to finish the scoring for the quarter and for the half, as neither team could find the back of the net in the 2nd period. Halftime score: Comets 8, Blast 4.
The teams remained silent until near the end of the 3rd period, when Tiguinho kept the Comets’ scoring streak going with a goal, assisted by Jamar Beasley. The Blast came right back to score 20 seconds later to end the 3rd period with the Comets leading 10-7.
The fourth period was a completely different story, as the Blast score quickly and often, tallying three goals in the period’s first 7 ½ minutes to take a 13-10 lead. Playing with a 6th attacker, the Comets’ Tiguinho would score with five seconds left in regulation. Final: Blast 13, Comets 12.
“We had this one, and to let it slip away is tough, really tough,” said Comets head coach, Kim Roentved. “We should be walking out of here feeling great and having a “W” in our pocket, heading to Chicago, but you have to hand it to the Blast for coming back the way they did.”
The loss leaves the Comets with a record of 1-4. The Comets next game is at 6:00 p.m. tomorrow, December 12th at the Chicago Riot. The Comets next home game is on Sunday, December 19th against the Riot at 3:10 p.m. at the Independence Events Center.
