The Wizards had to make room on the roster when they traded for Shavar Thomas and today that move was announced. The Wizards waived Pablo Escobar to make the roster space. This move is surprising but not shocking as Escobar had struggled regularly for the Wizards. Escobar had plenty of raw skills, including speed, height, and a powerful shot, but struggled more than he impressed. It seemed like this move was going to likely come down to either Escobar or Aaron Hohlbein as the addition of Thomas gave the Wizards 5 central defenders, so one of them getting the ax was expected with the addition of Thomas. While I like Hohlbein, I thought he'd be the one to go as I thought Vermes would have seen more potential in the Colombian, especially after Hohlbein's howler against New York.
Escobar made 7 league appearances for the Wizards, all starts for a combined 529 minutes. Outside MLS play, Escobar played the full 90 minutes in the Wizards 2-1 loss to Colorado in a US Open Cup qualifier. Good luck to Pablo wherever he ends up now.
