Arnaud's Red Card Deamed "Harsh"

In my post game write up about the game against Houston I said that Davy Arnaud's red card for his challenge on Pat Onstad was a harsh red card. Today U.S. Soccer Director of Referee Development, Paul Tamberino agreed with that assessment as he too called the red card harsh during his review of this week's MLS action. He wasn't as direct as he was on the Seattle call a few weeks ago, instead he took a bit more middle of the road response to the call. Tamberino said “For us we feel it’s a little bit harsh even though the studs were exposed. He does make contact with Pat Onstad’s arm. There really is no deliberate intention coming in there. It’s more of an unthoughtful challenge than malicious. The leg wasn’t locked and he didn’t lunge at him. We thought that was a bit harsh but the ref has a different view on the field. We have the luxury of the replay.”

And that's a fair assessment of the tackle. As with the last time the Director of Referee Development spoke out about a call in a KC game it doesn't exactly make me feel any better, but it's nice to know that Wizards fans weren't overreacting when they said it was harsh.

Seems like they should take away the penalty for next game then... If the review staff says it wasn't a good call, why should the player be penalized?

With the replay it should have been a yellow, but frankly I still say Arnaud needs to be more careful in such a situation.

If Oduro slid on Nielson like that and got a red, I don't think we'd be moaning.

A veteran has to be more disciplined.

There's a big difference between sliding in and what Arnaud did. Arnaud was trying to get a 50/50 ball and still had control of his body. A slide you lose a bit of that control when you go to ground.

I agree Anon, except when it's on a goalie it's different. They're vulnerable in a way that is different from field players. Arms, wrists, and fingers can snap pretty easily compared to lower legs and thighs. It's the "slide" on the goalie that makes it more agregious.

Onstad made a meal of it, no suprise, and Vaughn is red card happy. Thats how Davy plays, got to live with it, completely commited to getting on the end of things, wish I could say that about our other attackers.

Judge, I'm removing your comment because as upset as I am with Vaughn's call, there's no reason to post his personal phone number and home address.

Ok mike...it's your blog, you get to play the judge here, but it's from a simple google search...available to anyone who can type...not exactly confidential info...and he's still a biased little c**t who ruined the game and cost us points...
