Stadium Information (Capacity Down)
Thanks to a poster on Bigsoccer, we have more information on the Wizards stadium site out at the Legends. The Unified Government held a public hearing on the stadium plan and have released some new information about the site. In the first document you get to see some side views of what the stadium will look like and just how dramatic the raise in the roof will be on one side of the stadium. The one really interesting thing from the first link is that it says the stadium will now only hold 16,500. I hope that's a misprint or doesn't include the Cauldron or something, because 16,500 is a drop of 1,500 from what Robb Heineman told Wizards fans and what's been in the media since this plan became official. It's disappointing if this new capacity is true, as the capacity of the Wizards stadium has gone from about 20,000 when the first site was considered to 19,000, to 18,500, to 18,000 and now 16,500. The capacity keeps dropping, but with the way things continually change in this process, the capacity could change 4 to 5 more times before the stadium is actually built. A second document contains more blue prints of the site and even has another rendering of the stadium from a different angle than the ones that we've gotten to see so far, that rendering is on the last page.
doesnt include the suites... i think someone on bigsoccer also mentioned that
ReplyDeletehaha, just checked; it was you who said that
ReplyDeleteI thought that 18,000 seats was appropriate for the Wizards. 16,500 is a little embarrassing. That would be the smallest soccer specific stadium in MLS. Does anyone know what the stadium will be called? Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteLook 1500 seats is not that big of a deal, infact i would rather it look full and rowdy than see empty seats. Not like we will average 16500 buts per game anyway. Atleast its getting built, remind yourself that every once in a while. We, Kansas City, are getting a soccer stadium. Its a pretty cool time to be a Wizards fan.
ReplyDeleteYes, it was me, I got some more information after I posted this morning and I can't post to my blog from work. I'm working on a new post with some more information as well.
ReplyDeleteThe smallest soccer-specific stadium in MLS in the league's 2nd-smallest American market - what's the problem, exactly?
ReplyDelete157 of the Wizards' 184 pre-CAB MLS matches would have fit comfortably in a 16,500 stadium (85%).
Seriously, it's not a referendum on the size of your wangsniffer or your fandom. Just, please, let's be realistic - it's a small market and you have never, to this point, proven that you can continually draw substantially more than that.
Other than pride, what's the problem? Yes, it limits the top end of the revenue you can generate solely from tickets, but let's sell out the 16,500 place and force the issue before you pre-emptively bitch because the stadium's not big enough for you to brag to your friends about.
hey numbnuts,
ReplyDeleteI'm talking to you last anon, did you read the newer post by Mike, capacity is staying at 18,000, this is a dead topic.
I don't understand why you don't give credit to the people who actually find all your shit you post on your website.
