Kevin Hartman made his 91st start for the Wizards in all competitions, tying him with Peter Vermes for 20th on the all time list.
Ned Grabavoy's red card was the 16th in a Wizards game this season in allcompetitions, which continues to set a team record. It was also the 8th red card handed out to a Wizards opponent this season in all competitions, a new record. It was the 6th red card handed out in league play, tying the 1997 and 1998 seasons for the most red cards handed out to Wizards opponents in league play.
The Wizards are 3 minutes away from tying their team record for futility in goal scoring in one season. In the 2000 season, the Wizards went 427 minutes without scoring a goal. They still have a ways to go to catch their all time futility record, which is 639 minutes without a goal, beginning with an 80th minute goal against San Jose in the 4th to last game of the 1998 season. The team didn't score again until the 89th minute of the team's 4th game of the 1999 season against San Jose.

I'm Tired
I'm tired. So tired. I'm tired losing. So tired.
Ok, so it doesn't work out as well as Weezer's "Tired of Sex", but the sentiment is the same, I'm plain tired of losing at this point. It's been over 2 months since the team won a game. It's been over a month since the team scored a goal, and that continued last night back at CAB as Real Salt Lake came in and got only their second road win of the season, beating KC 1-0.
The early portion of the game went back and forth with both teams having some chances. Herculez Gomez put an early shot wide of the post, and Kevin Hartman did a good job at stopping Andy Williams as he attempted to turn and shoot a few minutes later. As the half continued, though, it was Salt Lake that took control of the game, and were rewarded in the 18th minute. Salt Lake played it down the Wizards left, before squaring into the middle for Pablo Campos who was open after Jimmy Conrad got caught ball watching. Campos had time to pick his corner and easily beat Hartman to give RSL the lead.
Kansas City tried to come back, but their best chances were mainly from distance or off target. Claudio Lopez did have a few chances, including one where he made a long run from the midfield got into the box and forced Chris Seitz to knock the ball out for a corner. The game changed late in the first half, when Ned Grabavoy was sent off for a tackle on Gomez. Advantage was played at the time and the Wizards should have really equalized before the red card. Lopez played in a great cross to Jack Jewsbury who was unmarked in the middle of the box, but he put his header over.
KC made one halftime change, bringing on Zoltan for Adam Cristman. Zoltan helped the Wizards to continue to push the game for the equalizer, his speed of play and vision on passes should have been rewarded at least once if not more often with a goal, as he set up Gomez in the 58th minute, but he blazed his shot high and wide. KC continued to pressure and Lopez forced a good save out of Seitz in the 62nd minute. The majority of the second half was down in Salt Lake's end, and KC had a few penalty shouts that came more from the Cauldron than from the players on the field, including Gomez going down in the box, and a collision on a corner kick. In second half stoppage time, Zoltan forced Seitz into another good save on a ball headed for the corner. Unfortunately KC continues to struggle finding the net, it's now 4 games without a goal and only 1 in the last 7 league games.
Wizards Man of the Match - Zoltan - Zoltan brought something entirely different to the game in the second half. He was able to find players with passes and was getting into dangerous situations. You could tell he was getting frustrated with the way that many of his teammates were playing yesterday. He did enough in my opinion to earn himself a start next week against New England.
Player Ratings - Hartman 5, Watson 4, Besler 4, Conrad 4, Harrington 4, Gomez 5, Hirsig 4, Jewsbury 4, Lopez 5, Arnaud 4, Cristman 3. Subs Zoltan 5, Myers 4, Leathers 4.

A Win Please
I'm honestly tired of this winless streak, how about you? The Wizards haven't won since they beat New England back in June (I'm sounding like a broken record saying that, but it's true). Tomorrow night the Wizards welcome Real Salt Lake to CAB. The good news for Wizards fans is that Real Salt Lake is not a good road team. Salt Lake is 1-8-2 on the road this season, having only scored 6 goals on the road all season. They're also going to be playing their 3rd game in 7 days, having played on Sunday in New England and on Wednesday at home against Chivas before coming to KC. Against Chivas, though, their offense clicked and they lit the Goats up for 4 goals Wednesday night. With the way the Wizards offense is going, if the Wizards even allow 1 goal right now the game seems to be over.
As for the Wizards, they've had the week to reflect on giving up a stoppage time winner to San Jose. The injuries get less and less, and with no suspensions, Peter Vermes has his largest player pool to choose from yet on who is going to be starting. There's bound to be a change or two to the lineup, as he continues to try to find a winning combination. I think we may get to see Matt Besler get his first shot at center back.
Key Match Up - Santiago Hirsig and Kyle Beckerman - Hirsig will have his hands full dealing with Beckerman who is having another solid season for RSL, including a call up for the Gold Cup and the upcoming qualifiers against El Salvador and Trinidad.
PREDICTION - If the Wizards want to make the playoffs, almost every game from here on out is a must win, especially the home games. CAB hasn't been the home field it was last season, but they'll have to make it one tomorrow if they want a shot at the playoffs. A loss and this team will just continue their free fall. Can KC do it? I honestly have my doubts. The offense has looked anemic for quite a few games now with few chances created overall. But I think if they can get one goal things may fall into place. I'm going to try and be optimistic.

Save of the Week
Kevin Hartman's finger tip save on Cornell Glen's attempted chip early in Saturday's game against San Jose is up for Save of the Week award this week. You can go vote for the save here.
Friendly at Arrowhead
This entire summer there have been big name clubs from around the world playing in the United States as part of their preseason. Unfortunately none of those games have been in KC. That looks like it will be changing in September. Rumor had been around that there would be a friendly at Arrowhead between Club America and Chivas de Guadalajara in September. Checking Ticketmaster today, the friendly is there on the site, although tickets for the game do not go on sale until tomorrow. So if you ever wanted to see two of the biggest clubs in Mexico play each other in a "friendly" here is your chance.
UPDATE: The Wizards have announced that the game will also double as Special Game B for Wizards season ticket holders. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I love the fact that we're getting some major international club teams in to play a friendly, but I wish they were playing the Wizards. I'm happy to see the game cause I love watching soccer, but I'd rather my Wizards season tickets be used for games involving the Wizards, they're the team I'd rather see play (even though they are playing horrible right now).
You can buy tickets for the game through the Wizards by calling them 913.387.3400, if you (like me) avoid Ticketmaster at all costs.

Rangers Beat Creighton
The Swope Park Rangers started the fall portion of their "season" with a 4-2 win over the University of Creighton today out at the Swope Park training facility. You can follow the twitter updates of the game over at the Wizards twitter page. Here's the lineup that started the game.
From what I was told by people at the game, the Rangers had a few early chances, beating the keeper, but unable to beat the post. It was actually Creighton that grabbed the lead as they scored on a breakaway. The Rangers, though, came back as the half wore on through Adam Cristman. Cristman tied the game up as he rounded the keeper. He made it 2-1 soon after as Jonathan Leathers made an overlapping run and crossed to Cristman.
Swope Park made one change at half time, as Michael Kraus entered the game for Graham Zusi. Creighton made it 2-2 when one of their players intercepted a poor back pass. The Rangers made more changes as the half went on, as Josh White, Eric Kronberg, and Kevin Souter all entered the game as the half went on. Kraus put the Rangers up for good with a header at the back post to make it 3-2. They sealed the game when Aaron Hohlbein connected with a Souter corner kick and headed it into the net.
This was the second time the Rangers have played Creighton this season, as they tied 2-2 back in the spring.

Another Game, Another Loss
The Wizards had looked to pick up a point on the road with a 0-0 draw with San Jose yesterday until late in second half stoppage time. San Jose then found the back of the net through Chris Wondolowski, and the Wizards fell for the third straight game and 4th time in 6 league games. The team's winless streak has now reached 11 games in all competitions when you factor in the Open Cup and SuperLiga.
At times KC looked dangerous, but at times we saw the Wizards team we've come to expect lately, especially early when San Jose was dominating play. Cornell Glen thought he'd scored twice in the first half, but was once whistled for a push on Jimmy Conrad and the second time was offside. The Wizards have Kevin Hartman to thank for not being down 1-0 in the first half. After coming out off his line to break up a play, the ball fell to Glen, who tried to chip Hartman as he hurried back onto his line. Hartman got his hand up and got just enough of a touch on the ball to push it onto the post and out of play. Glen was a menace for KC until he came off in the first half due to injury. KC did have chances of their own in the first half, as Herculez Gomez played Jack Jewsbury in behind the Earthquakes defense, but Jewsbury couldn't beat Joe Cannon 1v1. Conrad also had a chance on a free kick from Claudio Lopez, but Conrad's run had basically taken him pass the ball, as it hit his trailing foot as he ran into the box.
In the second half, KC came out as the stronger side, but didn't produce any chances of substance. As the second half wore on, the Wizards started to push for the point, as Matt Besler came on as a substitute. A goal didn't look likely as the second half wore on, but as stoppage time started, Josh Wolff broke down the left and looked to be setting up a good opportunity, but his ball into the box was poor and easily picked off. San Jose came back down the field and Ramiro Corrales played a ball into the box, where Wondolowski flicked the ball on with his head and pass Hartman into the net. A crushing blow to the Wizards who couldn't mount any more offense in the last part of stoppage time.
Wizards Man of the Match - Herculez Gomez - The Wizards didn't offer much going forward, but what they did have going forward seemed to mainly go through Gomez. He pushed the issue down the right and probably should have had an assist or two.
Player Ratings - Hartman 5, Watson 5, Conrad 4, McKenzie 3, Harrington 4, Gomez 5, Hirsig 4, Jewsbury 4, Lopez 4, Arnaud 3, Wolff 3. Subs Besler 4, Cristman NR.

A Win? A Goal Maybe?
Five without a win in league play, 10 in all competitions, the Wizards are struggling mightily. They are current 9 points out of a playoff spot with the Wizards having 11 games to play. Tomorrow the Wizards play the last place team in the Western Conference, San Jose in what is basically a must win for both teams if they have hopes of making the playoffs. San Jose, like KC has won only 1 game in their last 6 games, although they've brought in a few new players in the past few weeks that they'll hope will make a difference.
As for KC, they'll welcome back Davy Arnaud and Claudio Lopez who both missed the game against Chicago due to suspension. With them returning, the Wizards will hope to end a scoring drought that's see them only score 1 goal in league play in the last 5 games. KC will be without Zoltan for red card in his first game. Struggling would be an understatement for the Wizards offense lately, but what kind of changes need to be made? I don't expect many changes unfortunately, the lineup will be similar to what has played the last few games. Besides Arnaud and Lopez returning, the only other change I'm pretty sure will happen is the return of Michael Harrington to the starting lineup. I'm thinking that Peter Vermes is going to give Matt Besler a break after his poor performance againsnt Chicago.
Key Match Up - Lance Watson vs Darren Huckerby - Watson did a good job in the game earlier this season in shutting down Huckerby and for the Wizards to take points off San Jose this time, Watson will likely have to perform well again. If he doesn't, could we see Chance Myers return to the lineup?
PREDICTION - I'm not overly confident in the Wizards offense and I have doubts that we'll see that changes much unfortunately. This team just doesn't strike offensive feat. Thankfully, San Jose overall hasn't looked well either so KC at least has some hope that they can pull something out of this game.

Myers Returns
Chance Myers will be available for this weekend's game against the San Jose Earthquakes. Myers, who has missed the entire year so far after breaking his fifth metatarsal, was removed from the disabled list today. The Wizards did not have to waive anyone to make room on the roster for Myers, as he fills the developmental roster spot vacated by Nelson Pizarro when he left the team back in May. The Wizards now currently have all 24 roster spots filled, with two more players still on the DL (Eric Kronberg and Kevin Souter).

Arrowhead Still in Running for World Cup
The USSF once again cut down the list of potential sites to host the World Cup should the US win the 2018 or the 2022 bid to host. Kansas City and Arrowhead Stadium have made the cut for the next round along with 26 other cities. The committee will name 18 sites for the final bid that the US will put forward. Also still on the list, is the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. The bid has to be in to FIFA by May of 2010. Hopefully by that time KC is still on the list and we can hopefully look forward to World Cup soccer in Kansas City.
I'm told that the bid put forth for by the committee in KC is most definitely a serious one and are willing to make the changes needed to Arrowhead to make sure that it meets FIFA requirements. So there's hope for those that are skeptical because of the size of the field at Arrowhead. Also, due to the large parking lot at the Truman Sports Complex, it gives plenty of space for Fanfest stuff. If you haven't already signed the petition, do so. I remember going to a game in Dallas in 1994 and it was amazing, I would love to have that atmosphere here in KC when the World Cup returns.

Former Wizards Update (UPATE)
Another week of former Wizards updates. We have the return of a former Wizard, as it appears that Edson Elcock has returned to the game, joining Yomby William again at Richmond. We also have the appearance of another former Wizard who is not playing any more. Dionysius Sebwe, who the Wizards drafted in 1996, is now a Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Defense in Liberia. He recently returned to Park University.

Donate Your Unused Season Tickets
This idea has been making the rounds on Bigsoccer the past few days and it's something that I think is a fantastic idea. I am personally getting behind it and would love to see this made into a big event, not just for this year, but potentially for years in the future. Here is the gist of the idea. Please get involved with this, as I think it'd be a great thing to do to expose kids to the beautiful game, and give the team some good PR.
Attention Wizards Season Ticket Holders
One of the perks of holding a Wizards season ticket is ability to trade tickets for games you have missed so you can bring friends and family along to other games. There are only a few games left to be played by the Kansas City Wizards this season and if it looks unlikely that you will be able to use these tickets please consider donating them back to the team to be put towards worthy cause by mailing them to:

Sunday Of Stats
Not a lot of stats from today's game, but in the coming weeks we should have a few more, big stats coming up for players, so stay tuned.
The Wizards tied a team record for the most red cards in all competitions in a season. Zoltan Hercegfalvi was the Wizards 8th red card of the season in all competitions, tying the record set in 2002.
Today was Jack Jewsbury's 135th start in all competitions for the Wizards, tying him with Diego Gutierrez for 10th on the all time list.

New Coach, Same Result
Peter Vermes made his first appearance on the sidelines as the Wizards interim coach today as the Wizards took on the Fire at Community America Ballpark. Unfortunately for Vermes and the Wizards, the team continued their losing trend, falling 2-0 to the Fire. KC is now winless in 5 in the league and winless in 10 in all competitions (the PK win over Minnesota is officially a draw).
Chicago came out as the more aggressive team early in the game, pressuring the Wizards and testing to see how they'd do under the new coach. The Fire took advantage of that pressure in the 13th minute when Chris Rolfe got in behind the Wizards defense and beat Kevin Hartman. Hartman got caught cheating to his far post on the play, as Rolfe went to Hartman's near side to make it 1-0 Fire. As the half continued, both teams were getting half chances, testing the opposing keeper enough to keep him awake, but not really force him into any big saves. The Fire almost made it two though in the 41st minute, when Marco Pappa drove in front the Wizards left, but his shot hit off the post back into play.
In the second half, the Wizards were the ones that were pressuring the Fire and almost capitalized after the team won a free kick down by the end line. The ball got played on the ground through the box where it eventually fell to Aaron Hohlbein. Hohlbein showed why he's a defender, though, as he took too much time to get his shot off allowing a Fire defender to slide and block the shot. Zoltan Hercegfalvi got his first minutes of the season and showed well for the time he was on the field. He had a good touch, an ability to play with his other teammates, and almost had an assist when he got a step on a Fire defender and crossed to Roger Espinoza, who couldn't get contact with the ball as he tussled with a Fire defender for the ball. Zoltan, though, didn't get to finish the game though, as in the 85th minute, Zoltan was red carded for a tackle from behind on Mike Banner. The Fire took advantage of the man advantage soon after as Logan Pause crossed for Banner, who easily beat Hartman to seal the game.
Overall, the team played better than they have previous few games. There was some good passing and build up, along with some good pressure. Unfortunately it looks like in the 2 weeks the team had off, they still didn't do a whole lot of work on shooting because while KC had 5 shots on goal today, none of them were a big test for Jon Busch in the Fire net. If they can improve their shooting, maybe they'll at least end the season on a high note, even if the team doesn't make the playoffs (which is looking more likely with each passing week). As mentioned earlier, I liked what I saw from Zoltan minus the red card tackle and hope to see more of it on the 29th against RSL.
Wizards Man of the Match - Lance Watson - Watson continues to play well for KC, he's able to get forward and into the offense while still being competent on defense. Today he did well to push the Wizards offense up the right side and to close down the Fire's attack on the right.
Player Ratings - Hartman 3, Watson 5, Conrad 4, Hohlbein 4, Besler 3, Hirsig 4, Morsink 4, Jewsbury 5, Espinoza 4, Wolff 3, Cristman 4. Subs - Harrington 4, Hercegfalvi 4, Gomez 4.

Back to Work
After a very slow week off (as the lack of posts show) the Wizards are back in action tomorrow against the Chicago Fire at Community America Ballpark. The Wizards stole a 2-2 draw in Chicago earlier this season, and can win the season series against the Fire with a win or a lower scoring draw tomorrow. That's going to be important potentially later in the season if it comes to tie breakers. The Fire come in with a few injuries and will likely be putting out a very patch work back line. Gonzalo Segares and Daniel Woolard are both out with injury, while it appears Wilman Conde could also miss the game with injury. Also, word is that Bakary Soumare may still be in France after his international friendly there with Mali. If so, all this puts a huge dent in the Fire's back line. Speaking of defenders, this will be former Wizard, Brandon Prideaux's last trip to KC as a player, as he will retire at the end of the season.
The Wizards lineup will be interesting to see tomorrow as well, as it'll be the first real game that Peter Vermes has been in charge of since taking over for Curt Onalfo. The team will be without Claudio Lopez and Davy Arnaud due to suspensions they picked up during the Dallas game the other week. With those 2 out, the offense will take on a completely different look then it has previously. It also appears that Jimmy Conrad will return to the starting lineup as well. Since I have not been out at practice this week, I'm going to guess the lineup will be fairly similar to that which was put out against the Brass last Friday, with maybe a few changes. I see Adam Cristman getting the start over Zoltan and I could see Roger Espinoza getting the start over Michael Harrington if he is healthy now. Other than that I don't expect much change, but who knows what Vermes has seen in the two weeks of practice he's had with the team.
Key Match Up - Jimmy Conrad vs Chris Rolfe - With Brian McBride out injured for the Fire, much of the offensive pressure now falls on Rolfe. Rolfe continues to play well for Chicago whether it be on the wing or up top. I have a feeling with that this game we'll be seeing Rolfe up top meaning a match up with captain Conrad.
PREDICTION - Chicago is the best road team in the league they've only loss twice on the road this season. Getting a win, even with the patchwork backline they'll have won't be easy. Cuauhtemoc Blanco is always going to be a threat no matter if he's starting or coming off the bench. It's hard to make a prediciton for this game not knowing how Vermes is going to play the team now, but Chicago's road record speaks for itself, as does the Wizards current form.

Former Wizards Update
A good week for many former Wizards, as Stephen Armstrong and Ryan Pore both scored multiple goals this past week, Eddie Johnson seems to have gotten himself a place as a sub on Fulham's bench, and Khari Stephenson is trying to add another cup winner's medal to his 2004 US Open Cup medal. More of the European leagues are kicking off. I have dropped Chris Konopka from the list as it appears he never fully signed for Longford Town and Dave Marino-Nachison on Bigsoccer has removed Konopka from his extensive list of Yanks Abroad.

Wizards Trialist
The Wizards have had another trialist in this week, and if a poster on bigsoccer is correct, the player is Zahui Thierry from the Ivory Coast. Thierry has played for both the U-17 and U-20 Ivory Coast national team. It would appear that in the 2008 season, he scored 2 goals for African Sports Academy, his club team. He's also played in the African club competitions. Looking at photos that Thad took of the trialist, he's not exactly a big player, in fact, he almost makes Lance Watson look big in comparison. Thad's report is that he appears to have some decent ball skills and played in the middle of midfield.
photos courtesy of Thad Bell
This is a continuation of Peter Vermes' efforts to tap into the African market. Last year the Wizards had talks with scouts and other people in Africa to help them find players. Hopefully this is the beginning of the Wizards getting into the African player market.

July Player of the Month
I forgot to write this write up last week, and after last week's result in Dallas to begin August, any choice now is going to look a little hollow when made.
Overall, July was not a good month for the Wizards. They went 0-2-2 in all competitions, bowing out of the US Open Cup to Seattle, and losing 1-0 to Houston. KC pulled out a point in New England and ended up with a draw against LA at home. It was a tough month in regards to the fact that KC spent the entire month without Jimmy Conrad and Davy Arnaud due to their play with the US in the Gold Cup. KC was also without Roger Espinoza for most of the month as well.
With only 1 goal scored in the entire month, it's definitely not an offensive player winning the award. In the end my decision came down to two players.
Kevin Hartman recorded 1 shutout in the month of July and only conceded 3 goals. Unfortunately the lack of offense left Hartman without a win in the month, but he did what he could to keep the Wizards in games and give them the chance to win it. He can't do everything for the team.
The other candidate was a bit of a surprise when I sat down and thought about it, as it's Rauwshan McKenzie. McKenzie stepped in for Conrad when he was gone with the US team and performed very well for KC during that time. Up until the Dallas game in August, the Wizards offense had been the major problem, the defense had been playing well to keep KC in the games.
The winner of July's Player of the Month....
Rauwshan McKenzie. I was surprised when I made this choice, but McKenzie had himself a very good July with his performance filling in for Wizards' captain Jimmy Conrad during the month.

Final Farewell to Onalfo
Today, former Wizards coach, Curt Onalfo gave a farewell to Wizards' fans via The Back Post. Onalfo says that he loves and appreciates the support of the fans and tells them to continue to support the team in the future.
While Onalfo's time with KC wasn't the most successful, he did at least bring the Wizards out of the worse situation they were in when he was hired before the 2007 season. Under Onalfo, the Wizards went 27-29-22, making the conference finals in the 2007 season and the conference semifinals in 2008. In the playoffs, Onalfo went 1-2-2, the lone win, a 1-0 win over Chivas USA in the 2007 MLS playoffs. Onalfo led KC to two straight US Open Cup Quarterfinal appearances, going 2-1-2, both times going out to the Seattle Sounders (USL and MLS version). Finally, in his only appearance in an international competition (the Wizards first since 2005) Onalfo went 0-1-2 in this year's SuperLiga.
Onalfo's attacking style didn't bring the goals that many Wizards' fans were hoping for when Onalfo was named coach back in November of 2006. In his 2 and a half seasons, the Wizards scored 102 league goals under Onalfo, which placed KC in 9th place of the 13 teams that have played all the games of the past two and a half seasons (meaning no San Jose or Seattle). Not exactly the offense you'd expect unfortunately. On top of that, the Wizards never really had much luck in blowing teams out, as only 1 under Onalfo did the Wizards win by 3 or more goals, and that was the team's home opener back in 2007 against, then expansion side, Toronto.
Still, knowing his history and what he's been through, and the "goodbye" message Thad posted, you still have to respect the man. Good luck Coach Onalfo in your next position (unless it's against the Wizards), with what you've already over come, this shouldn't be any harder to get by.

Wizards Defeat Brass
The Wizards once again defeated Kansas City's PDL team, the Brass today at the Swope Park training complex 7-1. KC started their first game under Peter Vermes with what could potentially be a starting lineup against Chicago a week from Sunday.
Adam Cristman apparently missed the game due to being sick, while Davy Arnaud, Claudio Lopez, and Roger Espinoza are recovering from minor injuries. The Brass actually struck first, when Jimmy Conrad got shurgged off the ball and the Brass player scored past Kevin Hartman. Lance Watson was the one that found the equalizer for the Wizards soon after. Not long later, Matt Besler got in on the scoring, putting away a Herculez Gomez corner with his head. KC went into half time with that lead.
At half time, KC made full changes to the team, as the Swope Park Rangers took the field in the second half for the Wizards.
Abe Thompson opened up the scoring for the Wizards, making it 3-1, before Chance Myers scored on a diving header to make it 4-1. Defensive midfielder, Kurt Morsink made it 5-1 scoring from distance and Michael Kraus made it 6-1. Josh White and Eric Kronberg both entered the game to get some playing time as well, replacing Besler and Boris Pardo respectively. Thompson finished off the scoring late in the game as he stole the ball and placed it in the far post.
This is the last game the Wizards/Rangers will play against PDL opposition this year, as the players are all heading back for their college season soon. The Rangers, though, will be getting more games this fall against college teams again, as they did in the spring. They'll be playing Creighton on Monday August 24th.

New From MLSnet
Some Wizards news tonight from MLSnet. Firstly, if there were questions that you have ever wanted to ask anything to Wizards technical director/interim head coach, Peter Vermes, you have your chance. The Wizards are doing a fan chat next week with Vermes and are asking for fans to submit questions to be asked to Vermes. I know I'll be submitting a few questions to Vermes.
The other news, is an encouraging article for all Wizards fans after last week's 6-0 demolition by FC Dallas, and that's the return of Jimmy Conrad. Conrad talks about the moments after the concussion and not being able to remember much of the time after that. Hopefully we'll see Conrad back on the 16th. He seems to be targeting that as his return date. Let's hope so as the defense looked really poor against Dallas.

Former Wizards Update
Here's this week's former Wizards update. We have the return of one of our Fall-Spring season former Wizards to play, as Matt Taylor and FSV Frankfurt started their season in the DFB Pokal. We also have news that looks like it will effect two former Wizards, as the Argentine league has suspended the Apertura season. This means Eloy Colombano and Carlos Marinelli may not get to play right away in Argentina this season.

Wizards Play Brass Friday
For those that want to see the Wizards first game under Peter Vermes, and don't have to work on Friday, head on over to the Swope Training Complex, where the Wizards will be taking on the KC Brass Friday morning at 10:30. Unfortunately due to my new job I won't be able to provide updates on the game via twitter as I have in the past. I'm sure Hillcrest will have a write up on the game of some sort.

Vermes Officially Interim Coach
For those that missed it earlier today, Peter Vermes was officially named the Wizards interim coach for the rest of this season. Also in the announcement, Wizards color commentator, Zoran Savic, was named an assistant coach. Vermes will be in charge for the rest of the season as KC looks to find a permanent head coach. Savic is back in coaching after being a color commentator for the Wizards the past few years. Before that he was an assistant under Preki at Chivas USA. He's best known to people in Kansas City as the former head coach of the Kansas City Attack/Comets.
To listen to the full press conference, check out Thad's post over at The Back Post. Only one of the local stations did not send their television crew to follow the press conference today. You can get a bit of insight into what Vermes is going to be doing as a coach for the rest of the season.
Also after the press conference, Thad got interviews with Vermes, Wizards captain, Jimmy Conrad, and vice captain, Josh Wolff about the new hiring, the firing of Onalfo, and their general thoughts, it's another good interview.

Vermes to be Interim Coach?
Randy Covitiz at the Star is reporting that Wizards technical director, Peter Vermes is to be named the team's interim coach tomorrow morning at a press conference. Whether that happens or not, it's a bit of a shocking move that he's being named coach. Although he was one of the people considered for both the coaching openings in Seattle and Philadelphia, it's surprising. It will be interesting to see what comes of Vermes as a head coach, if it's like he was as a player, it's going to be intense from now on. (EDIT: The Star article has now been edited taking out the part about Vermes being named the interim coach.)
As for who will eventually take over the position, Ives Galarcep makes an interesting point tonight, although he doesn't completely realize it. That being former Metrostars coach, Octavio Zambrano. Zambrano has recently been coaching in Hungary, a place that Vermes has visited to check out players. Zambrano knows MLS and how it works, which is almost a prerequisite to coach in MLS today. If you don't know the rules you won't last long, so Zambrano could definitely be on the Wizards short list.

Onalfo GONE!
Thad over at The Back Post has the breaking news, with the press release coming soon, that Coach Onalfo has been dismissed by the Wizards. The move comes after the Wizards embarrassing 6-0 loss to Dallas on Sunday. Along with Onalfo being let go, assistant coach, Kris Kelderman was also let go. That leaves Kerry Zavagnin and John Pascarella as the two remaining coaches.
The interim coach will not be announced until the team has been informed following Monday's off day, but you have to think Zavagnin and Pascarella are the leaders to be the interim coach. My guess is it would be Zavagnin in the interim role and potentially see Paul Rideout step up as an assistant to help out.
I'm shocked that this move happened so quickly. The last 2 months without a win have been frustrating and it's finally come to a head. I thought that this move could be coming after Saturday, but not this soon. Good for OnGoal for stepping up, seeing there was a problem, and working to fix it.
Thanks to what Onalfo has brought, he at least got us back to the playoffs finally, but the team has not improved under him in the last 2 and a half years, we are still a boarderline playoff team.

Sunday After Stats
It was Josh Wolff's 250th appearance in all competitions for an MLS side.
Wolff also made his 114th start for the Wizards in all competitions, breaking a tie with Sean Bowers for sole possession of 14th place on that list.
The red card for Claudio Lopez was the Wizards' 7th of the season in all competitions. This year is now solely in second place for the most red cards in a season for the Wizards.
Michael Harrington made his 75th MLS appearance for KC.
Kevin Hartman started his 78 MLS game for the Wizards, breaking a tie with Chris Brown for 19th on that list.
Hartman also started his 100th straight MLS game last night.
In the 27th minute, Jack Jewsbury passed Diego Gutierrez to move into 10th place for the most minutes played in all competitions for the Wizards. Jewsbury finished the game with 12,308 minutes played.

Embarrassed, Pissed Off, and Frustrated
I've personally never felt as bad about a Wizards game as I did after last night's 6-0 drubbing at the hands of FC Dallas. I mean I'm more embarrassed about this game than I was at the time of the Chicago 7-0 debacle back in 2001. That's because for this game I'd spent hours in the car, and more money traveling down to Dallas for this game than for the game at Arrowhead against the Fire. It's hard to put into words how frustrated I was walking out of Pizza Hut Park last night.
The game was slow to start with neither side getting a great start to the game. After 30 minutes, though, Dallas started to dominate the game. Brek Shea started to get plenty of space on the Wizards right side, as did Atiba Harris. Jeff Cunningham took advantage of one of those chances in the 39th giving Dallas the lead. Less than 3 minutes later, Dallas doubled the lead through David Ferreira, again after Jack Jewsbury got beat down the right side. Half time saw Coach Onalfo make 1 change bringing on Lance Watson to replace Herculez Gomez and pushing Jewsbury into the midfield.
KC came out in the second half and almost pulled level as Davy Arnaud hit a shot from outside the box that Dario Sala did well to save. It was KC's best chance of the game, and their only shot on goal all game. Just past the hour mark Rauwshan McKenzie was called for a penalty for bringing down Cunningham in the box on what was a bit of an iffy call. Things didn't get any better for the Wizards when 2 minutes after Cunningham made it 3-0, Claudio Lopez was sent off for a tackle on Dax McCarty. Another harsh call, but a stupid foul by Lopez as well.
Cunningham finished off his hattrick in the 75th minute making it 4-0. And it became 5 only 3 minutes later with Ferreira scoring a second goal. Then, in the 89th minute, Cunningham got his 4th goal.
The team just quit last night, they were completely out matched by a team at the bottom of the Western Conference. This match has to fall on everyone with the team, the players, coaches, and Peter Vermes. Onalfo has to take a lot of the blame for it and his coaching seat has to be very hot now. If he's lost the locker room, and the players have quit on him (they at least quit on the game last night), then Onalfo needs to go immediately. Other wise, he gets at least until the end of the year to prove he should come back. Either way, the "CO Must Go" crowd is getting louder and growing in number with each passing day.
By the time the team takes the field against Chicago in 2 weeks, it will have been 2 months since the team's last win.
Wizards Man of the Match - NONE - I honestly can't name a man of the match for last night's game because nobody honestly deserved it, zero goals by the offense, six allowed by the defense, and a midfield that was over run.
Player Ratings - Hartman 4, Jewsbury 3, Hohlbein 3, McKenzie 2, Besler 3, Gomez 3, Hirsig 2, Arnaud 4, Lopez 2, Wolff 2, Cristman 2. Subs Watson 3, Harrington 3, Thompson 3.
