In their first preseason game against another MLS team, the Wizards fell this morning to the Columbus Crew, in a game divided up into 3 30 minute periods. The Wizards starters lost 1-0 vs the Crew starters in their part of the match. The starting lineup looked much like I would have expected with a 3-5-2, with Jimmy Conrad anchoring a young back line that included both Aaron Hohlbein and Tyson Wahl in front of Kevin Hartman. A central midfield of Kerry Zavagnin, Kurt Morsink, and Carlos Marinelli, with the last two first round picks by the Wizards, Michael Harrington and Chance Myers on the wings. Scott Sealy partnering Ryan Pore up top.
This lineup does not look to strike much fear in our opponents, though. The back line is going to be prone to youthful mistakes I think, and Iván Trujillo can't get here soon enough if we're going to rely on a Sealy-Pore striker tandem. I can't think of one back line in the league that would be scared of that partnership.
The team has another post on their blog with some more in-depth break down, including how the roster broke down for each of the 3 30 minute periods. Apparently, the majority of the players that started the game went 60 minutes. Only Conrad, Morsink, and Marinelli who all came out at 45 didn't play 60 minutes. None of the team's supplemental picks played, and the only SuperDraft pick not to play, was Rauwshan McKenzie.
The blog also gives us an update on Wizards back up keeper, Eric Kronberg, who is apparently suffering from a shoulder injury, but should be back soon.
